I Want to Be a Rock Star (Solomon, the OT Rock Star)

Solomon was an OT rock star. When I read Ecclesiastes 2 I think of the popular song by Nickelback "I Want to Be a Rock Star". Read the words and think about how similar it is to the story of Solomon. Yes, God was pleased when Solomon prayed for wisdom in 2 Chronicles 1, but in Ecclesiastes Solomon indulged in the pleasure of a playboy it's the same kind of story Chad Kroeger sings about today. I'm through with standin' in line To clubs I'll never get in It's like the bottom of the ninth And I'm never gonna win This life hasn't turned out Quite the way I want it to be (Tell me what you want) I want a brand new house On an episode of Cribs And a bathroom I can play baseball in And a king size tub big enough For ten plus me (Yea, So what you need) I need a credit card that's got no limit And a big black jet with a bedroom in it Gonna join the mile high club At thirty-seven thousand feet --(Been there done that)-- I want a new tour bus full of old guitars My own star on Hollywood Boulevard Somewhere between Cher and James Dean is fine for me (So how you gonna do it?) I'm gonna trade this life for fortune and fame I'd even cut my hair and change my name [CHORUS] 'Cause we all just wanna be big rockstars and Live in hilltop houses driving fifteen cars The girls come easy and the drugs come cheap We'll all stay skinny as we just won't eat And we'll hang out in the coolest bars In the VIP with the movie stars Every good gold digger's Gonna wind up there Every Playboy bunny With her bleach blonde hair And well... Hey, hey, I wanna be a rockstar Hey, hey, I wanna be a rockstar I read this song in our Bible at church and compared it to Solomon. Ecclesiastes 2:1 I thought in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure to find out what is good." ... And what does pleasure accomplish?" 3 I tried cheering myself with wine, and embracing folly—my mind still guiding me with wisdom. I wanted to see what was worthwhile for men to do under heaven during the few days of their lives. 4 I undertook great projects: I built houses for myself and planted vineyards. 5 I made gardens and parks and planted all kinds of fruit trees in them. 6 I made reservoirs to water groves of flourishing trees. 7 I bought male and female slaves and had other slaves who were born in my house. I also owned more herds and flocks than anyone in Jerusalem before me. 8 I amassed silver and gold for myself, and the treasure of kings and provinces. I acquired men and women singers, and a harem as well—the delights of the heart of man. 9 I became greater by far than anyone in Jerusalem before me. In all this my wisdom stayed with me. 10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. ... Solomon was a big rock star. He tried it all - wine, women, and wealth but he was never satisfied. Solomon said in 2:11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun." ... 12:13 Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man. 14 For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil. I don't want to be a rock star. I want to follow Jesus.

Hey Jeff,
I just overheard my husband and daughter and her boyfriend discussing this song this week end so (hope you don't mind) I'm gonna print this off and share it with them.

And re: your post on being sober 5 years I praise God with you.

He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we are able to ask, think or even imagine, according to His power that works in us. (Eph.3)

In Christ

This verse that you posted Jeff struck me and I reflected on it. God is always with us every step we made is according to God's will. Though the only thing that can save us is to follow his commandments for blessings will shower upon us not just as individuals but as family blessings. Fear him and love him! Thanks for your post Jeff.
